Large Multidatabases: Beyond Federation and Global Schema Integration
نویسنده
چکیده
Advances in wide area networking is making the goal of achieving a worldwide interoperable database system closer than ever. Because of the large environment , new problems have surfaced that need to be addressed. We distinguish several reasons for a new design approach. Traditional approaches like global integration and federated approaches are better suited to small and medium scale heterogeneous databases. In a large network of interoperable autonomous heterogeneous databases, the architecture should be exible enough to allow negotiation to take place to establish grouping of databases. In such a large environment, it is important that databases be made aware of other participating databases in an incremental fashion. Further, users should be educated about the space of information in an incremental and dynamic fashion. These goals are to be achieved under the major assumptions that participating databases keep their autonomy intact as much as possible and that the overhead in bridging heterogeneity be proportional to the level of sharing. In this paper, we describe a two-level approach that addresses these issues.

Research in the area of data integration has resulted in approaches such as federated and multidatabases, mediation, data warehousing, global information systems, and the model management/schema matching approach. Architecturally, approaches can be categorized into those that integrate against a single global schema and those that do not, while on the level of inter-schema constraints, most wor...
متن کاملQuery Mediation for Heterogeneous Data Sources
We present a novel approach to the problem of query mediation in a tight federation of heterogeneous, distributed data sources. It is based on query correspondence assertions (QCAs), which are set-equation between conjunctive queries. We use them as rules to express relationships between heterogeneous and autonomously maintained schemas. We describe an algorithm that uses QCAs to translate quer...
متن کاملGlobal Demands ON Medical Education
World action in medical education, notably the global programs of the World Federation for Medical Education, the Edinburgh Declaration of 1988 and the 1993 World Summit, has led to major curricular change in medical schools. For educational reform to result in improved health services of nations, an essential requirement is integration between the medical education system and the health care d...
متن کاملDÍGAME: A Vision of an Active Multidatabase with Push-based Schema and Data Propagation
Sharing information in loosely coupled enterprises or virtual corporations demands a flexible and dynamic architecture, suitable for their individual data policies. The aim of this paper is to present the D́ıgame architecture, which balances both, local autonomy and a reasonable degree of information sharing. Therefore we combine the well known concept of loosely coupled multidatabases with more...
متن کاملResolving Semantic Heterogeneity in Databases with a Terminological Model: Correspondence Refinement
The success of schema integration in multidatabase systems relies heavily on the determination of complete and refined correspondence relationships between them. So, the candidate schemas to be integrated must be rich and precise semantically, i.e., each of their data elements must be sufficiently defined for to be distinguished from others or identified to some of them. Our schema integration ...
